5-1-1- is a free phone number that offers statewide travel information on traffic, public transit, road conditions and Lake Powell ferry services. 511 uses the same resources as Commuterlink -- traffic sensors, emergency dispatch center incident data, weather sensors and closed-circuit television cameras. Similar to 911 for emergencies, or 411 for directory assistance, those who travel in Utah can dial 511 to access current travel information. Those wishing to access the system from outside the state can call 1-866-511-UTAH (8824) toll-free.
The Federal Communications Commission designated 511 as a nationwide number for travel information in July 2000. In December 2001, Utah became one of the first states to launch 511. As of November 2006, 511 services are available in 27 states across the country. The U.S. Department of Transportation has set a goal of nationwide coverage by 2010.
